Albani Church and Cemetery

Earlier this week, we were out and about and decided to check out some places we hadn't explored before. We walk by the Albani Church each trip to the grocery store and we hear its church bells all too well from our apartment. However, we had not really walked up on the grounds and looked at the beauty of the building up close.

We decided to take the long walk home on the city wall. Because Goettingen was relatively unharmed during WWII, much of the very old parts of the city are still standing, like the wall. You can walk the entirety of the wall surrounding the Inner City. It's the most lovely walk.

The old city cemetery is in the park near our apartment and we hadn't paid too much attention to it yet. Honestly, most of the time there are people just hanging out around the graves. But as we walked through this day, it was empty.

This is Johann Eichhorn's grave. He was a professor at the University of Goettingen in the late 1700-early 1800's. He's considered the father of modern Old Testament Criticism.

The detail of the stone graves was impressive and I love all the moss growing on everything.

There's no real system to be seen in how the graves are laid out. It was interesting reading all the dates. Most were in the 1700-1800s. I'm not really one for cemeteries, but I did appreciate the history of this one.
